It has been 1 week since hurricane Gustav came by us. It was projected to hit us but then turned north and just passed about 40-50 miles away from our coast. When it came by it was a cat 1 then around 2 A.M. it turned to a cat 2. We were all preparing for it to go directly over so all the houses and business had storm windows closed, or boards on all the doors and windows. Everything closed on Friday and we just waited for the storm to come. We got some rain Friday afternoon and the winds started to pick up as the evening progressed. By 10 P.M. It was pretty windy but we hadn't really had much rain. At about 1:00 A.M. Austin and I went outside just by our apartment. I can't even describe how almost majestic it was. The sky was a light grey from all the clouds and there was this wonderful citrus like smell in the air. We kept getting these blue flashes that lit up the sky. (We found out later from listening to the radio that it was a electric transformer blowing and that is what the blue was, but it was still pretty cool) I wanted to stay outside just to smell the air. We went back in and listened to the radio until about 2 a.m. then went to bed. The smaller Cayman Islands got most of the hurricane and had quite a bit of flooding, but Grand Cayman only had minimal damage.
The next night it was still pretty windy so we went to see what the ocean looked like. We went to this little spot called Smith Cove that has a lot of rocks and some beach and this is what we found. I didn't get a lot of the biggest waves and crashes on video but you get the idea.
It was so cool to see the waves roll in and then crash into the rocks. You could feel the power they had when they would crash. We stood there and watched them for about 1 hour. Here are a few of the pictures that I took. I wish that my camera captured the true light of the sunset.
I also loved to watch the water cascade off the rocks after a wave would hit.

I loved this picture of Austin holding Kaity looking at the waves. I had to have my camera on a night setting and because of the wind I couldn't hold it still enough to get a clear picture. This is the clearest on I could get. It was cute Austin kept pointing out to the waves and then I would see Kaity point too. (those ones were all to blurry)
Finally we let Allie and Kaity play in the waves. I got in with them and held onto them as the waves went crashing into us. They loved it, and would have stayed all night doing that.
We got really lucky that the storm just passed us by and we didn't have much damage. It was a really neat and I am glad I got to experience it.

Those are some adorable pictures. I too can't believe how huge the waves were- such a change from our calm waters we are all used to! Thanks for the tag, I'll get right to it. I'm pretty bored here at work anyway! Are you going to the talent show? Please tell me you are doing a family talent...
I am so glad that you got a blog going before you left, it is awesome to see a little of the coolness (i just made up a word i think) that you are experiencing.
wow way cool, I am so glad you are all safe.
Those waves are crazy scary! I can't believe you dared get in, that woudl scare me to death. I love the ocean, but is so powerful, don't ya think?
I left a comment below too :)
I am so glad you posted, I have been checking in on you to see how you guys did in the hurricane! We lived in Florida for over 2 years and no storms, and there you are, barely there, and you have 2 so far! Great pictures!
I love the video of the waves. The ocean is so cool (and scary!!). Once again, it looks absolutely beautiful there...I may be begging Dan for a vacation out there!! :)
I'm glad that your husband is doing so well after his bone marrow transplant. I can't even imagine how hard it was for you guys to go through that, especially with a little girl (and you were pregnant too, right?). I'm hoping my friend will have the same turn out. Cancer sucks.
Hey Heidy! It's been a while (I guess only a week), but we miss you guys. How is Austin liking school? Have you started doing Ally's lessons? I say you make a "Back to School" post and give us details on their studies. It's been a crazy week, but we'd love to get together sometime next week. I miss the girls! Tell them "Ally's teacher" said hi. :)
Okay, I don't know why I think this is so funny right now but I wonder why my first comment at the top of this page only says, "David said," it looks like he said that, but I can assure you he typically doesn't blog or leave comments. I'm sure Austin is just as much a blogger fanatic as David is. :)
P.S. Megan is married to Jeff...mine is Ryan! haha!
